Red Tail Catfish growth rate

How long does it take for a Red Tail Catfish to grow to full (3 foot) size? I am not contemplating getting one as i think they should only be in tropical ponds/public aquaria but i was just intrigued to know how long it takes them to reach full adult size?

Don't think it's very long, I'd hazard a guess at 2-3 years as a rough idea. I agree, shouldn't be available for sale to the general public, not without having a site/tank inspection.

One foot a year is not uncommon if fed correctly. I agree that most people should not have them, especially in an aquarium, as they will outgrow most aquariums and really need to be housed in a pond.

Red tailed cats are known for their EXTREMELY fast growth rates. my neighbor bought a 3-4 in baby and put it in a 10 g tank, within 2 months it was at about 10-13" and couldnt move in the tank, he brought it back to the pet store for credit lol......

Your friend is clearly a fool and should have done some research before buying said catfish. Having said that, the LFS is equally to blame, they should qualify people before selling them fish, especially tank busters like the red tail catfish!
